Researchers from the University of Sannio in southern Italy have designed Europe’s first ever house powered by hydrogen fuel cells together with a group of private companies and research bodies.
This house is situated in Benevento and is a student house but at the same time a living laboratory which is a “real-life” experiment. The hydrogen powered house is being tested to see if the limitations and benefits of this type of technology for future use in the residential sector.
"Lately we have focussed on the issue of CO2 emissions in the environment and worked on the idea of using hydrogen to make this house a completely self-sufficient system,” the dean of the University of Sannio, Gerardo Canfora, told Euronews.
According to the team at the University of Sannio, the fuel cells, fully powered by hydrogen, generate the electricity and heating needed to meet the building’s needs.
The new house was built and designed with a helping hand from the Stress Consortium which is a technology research center for sustainable construction.
This house can hopefully help inspire future initiatives using hydrogen fuel cells to power commercial and residential buildings.
