πŸ’» New world record in connection - one million times faster than broadband

Australian researchers have set a new world record in the speed of an internet connection. The record is now 44.2 terabits per second. With this speed, it is possible to download 1000 HD movies in a single second.

The team from the universities of Monash, Swinburne and RMIT used an optical circuit, a kind of micro-cam, with hundreds of infrared lasers to transmit data on existing communications infrastructure in Melbourne.

The highest commercial internet speed in the world is currently in Singapore where the average download speed is 197.3 megabits per second (Mbps). In Australia, the average download speed is 43.4 Mbps, which is a million times slower than the speeds achieved in the latest test.

– It’s a bit of a global race right now to make this technology commercially viable. This is because the micro comb, on which this is based, is useful in a large amount of existing technology, says researcher Bill Corcoran at Monash University to The Independent .

Bill Corcoran believes we will see units that are fully available in research in two to three years and the first commercial products in about five years.

The corona virus has caused considerable strain on the internet infrastructure worldwide so research in this area, with the potential to make substantial performance leaps, is extremely important.

These countries have the fastest internet in the world

When the internet connection in 2019 was researched in 207 countries and territories by British Cable.co.uk , the list looked like this. Note that this is an average where both upload and download speeds are calculated in megabits per second, Mpbs. So this is fixed internet connection, not mobile like 4G and 5G.

  1. Taiwan: 85.02
  2. Singapore: 70.86
  3. Sweden: 55.18
  4. Denmark: 49.19
  5. Japan: 42.77
  6. Luxembourg: 32.89
  7. The Netherlands: 40.21
  8. Switzerland: 38.85
  9. Norway: 38.46
  10. Spain: 36.06
  11. Belgium: 35.69
