According to WHO, 93% of children in Poland breathe polluted air while they play. This situation inspired a group of scientists to create a new playground called the Airbubble. It was built in central Warsaw, right next to the Copernicus Science Center.
How does the Airbubble work? Basically, a microclimate is created inside the bubble. The structure is equipped with dozens of bioreactors made of glass cylinders containing algae immersed in water. The algae absorb the polluted air that’s pumped in from below. The green organisms then release clean and pure air from the top of the bioreactors so that children can breathe clean and pure air while playing.
The Optimist Daily writes that according to Stanislaw Loboziak from Copernic Science Centre’s biological laboratory, children become curious about the vibrant green liquid surrounding the bubble, making it “a positive aspect in terms of education and information”. “It also serves to convince citizens of this technology, especially those who do not know that more than half of the oxygen on Earth is produced in the oceans by algae.”
The Airbubble is scheduled to stay put until November but it has the potential to become a permanent thing. There are also plans to set up more Airbubbles in other Polish cities.
