🧊 Green alternative to air conditioning: cooling bamboo system

In order to try and find a greener alternative to air conditioning a multidisciplinary architecture agency called AREP came up with a low-tech bamboo system that only needs three main components to work: those are water, hot air and bamboo.

This new system uses something known as an adiabatic process. The adiabatic process uses evaporation as a cooling system. When the air flows by the water, the water absorbs the heat making the air cool as it continues on.

“For centuries, ancient civilizations cooled down their buildings by using the natural freshness of water through the adiabatic principle. To evaporate, water needs energy which is ‘absorbed’ from the heat of the ambient air, thus generating the cooling effect,” explains AREP.

AREP has proved the system's efficiency and potential as a viable cooling alternative for cities. According to the designers, the bamboo cooling system managed to drop its surrounding temperatures from 30°C to 24°C (6°C).
