💨 The world's largest wind farm is complete

With 165 200-meter high wind turbines, Hornsea 2 is the largest wind farm ever built, the BBC reports.

The wind turbines are located in the sea off Yorkshire in the UK and generate enough energy to supply 1.3 million homes with all the electricity they need.

Although, Hornsea 2 will not be able to keep the title for very long. As early as next year, the Dogger Bank Wind Farm will be completed off the northeast coast of Great Britain and will generate enough electricity for six million homes.

The power plants have been built by Ørsted and are part of the UK's effort that all electricity production should be emission neutral by 2035. In total, renewable electricity now accounts for 40 percent of the UK's electricity production.

The current energy crisis has made it even more important and also more profitable to expand renewable energy sources.

“Last I checked it cost around £450 per megawatt hour to produce electricity from natural gas. That's about nine times as expensive as the current cost of building renewable electricity," says Simon Evans of Carbon Brief, an organization that analyzes the renewable electricity market, in a comment to the BBC.
