This year’s World Cleanup Day, gathered approximately 50 million people from 180 countries. Some people picked up litter alongside rivers and in forests. Divers collected marine debris in the Pacific and children in Africa collected trash on the beaches.
In Rome, dozens of volunteers filled bags with plastics and other types of rubbish along the river Tiber.
"We were raised that way," one of the young volunteers said to EuroNews. "We see with climate change and global warming, it's all kind going down south, so I think it's time we all get engaged to start the real action."
"The old people can make policies, we will do action," Tara Angelika Svetlin said as she filled up another bag.
In Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo, the volunteers cleaned up parks, promenades, and the slopes of Mount Trebevic.
According to the World Cleanup Day’s website, certain areas of Europe were most dedicated to the event. On the top of the list is Germany which hosted more than 900 registered events, France more than 600, and Italy more than 500 events.
When many people join forces to clean up our shared planet like this it hopefully inspires even more of us to do something which makes a difference in order to make a greener future come sooner.
