“Today the power and energy market is dominated by huge companies, you call them dinosaurs and I fully agree to that term,” said Edgeir Vårdal Aksnes, co-founder and CEO of Tibber, when he was a guest on the Warp News Show.
We are talking about the fourth D in the disruption that is coming to the energy sector.
Decarbonization – the world is moving away from energy produced by fossil fuels.
Decentralization – with solar panels more consumers can produce their own energy.
Digitalization – with connected appliances in our homes we can take control of our energy consumption.
That leads to the fourth D: Democratization.
Or “power to the people” as Edgeir Vårdal Aksnes puts it.
“All of the consumer tech coming, solar panel on your roof, an electric heater connected to wifi, or an electric vehicle that is also connected to the internet. That creates millions of assets that combined are more powerful than the huge energy companies. With the right tool in our hand, we as consumers can leverage that power.”
Over a couple of beers in Helsinki a few years ago, Edgeir Vårdal Aksnes and Daniel Lindén decided to quit their jobs to try instead to change the energy market by selling electricity without profit.
That might sound like a dumb idea, or at least like a very short-lived idea. But instead of making money off the electricity, you pay a membership fee. Otherwise the incentive – the real motivation – would be to get you to use more energy, not less.
Tibber is growing fast. They doubled the number of costumers in the first six months of 2020 to more than one hundred thousand.
We are happy to have Tibber as our first partner in the Warp News Show.
This came about when I became a Tibber costumer this winter. My wife and I bought an electric vehicle last year, and I wanted an app to help me charge the car when the price was lowest.
I found an app, that turned out to be an entire company. When I read about Tibber I realized they share a lot of values with Warp News. We strongly believe in decentralization and power to the people.
So when we started Warp News Show I reached out to them and asked if they wanted to come on the show and be a partner and contribute to Warp Institute’s mission of making the future come sooner.
Thank you Tibber for your support!
