For the first time in a decade, the European Space Agency (ESA) is looking for new astronauts to enter the frontier of space exploration, the agency told in a press release. The application opens on the 31st of March, and ESA encourages women to apply. Regarding the recruitment, ESA director general Jan WΓΆrner told:
Thanks to a strong mandate from ESA Member States at Space19+, our Ministerial Council in 2019, Europe is taking its place at the heart of space exploration. To go farther than we ever have before, we need to look wider than we ever have before. This recruitment process is the first step and I look forward to watching the agency develop across all areas of space exploration and innovation, with our international partners, in the years to come.
The astronaut profession is extreme and challenging. And the recruitment period is often long. ESA plans to have chosen their astronaut team by October next year. More information, and frequently asked questions, can be found here.
